Headstones, Hearsay, and a Little History:
In 1915 the Chatfield family moved to the up-and-coming agricultural town of Chico, buying a fairly new two-story corner residence in the Chapmantown district, a working-class neighborhood near the Diamond Match Factory. In those days most people rented; few owned their own homes. With only two upstairs bedrooms, the boys sharing one, the girls the other, it was a small house for a large family. Downstairs, Grandma Chatfield created a tiny sleeping space for herself in an alcove under the stairway, keeping the small downstairs bedroom for company. Grandpa, always on the outs with Grandma, slept in the shed.

Headstones, Hearsay, and a Little History:
The sixth Chatfield child of Nellie and Charles, Gordon Gregory Chatfield was born two years after Nellie May. She idolized her favorite brother; even as an adult she didn’t even scold him when on an outing with her small daughter, he took Beverly into a bar. It wasn’t unusual to take a child into a bar in those days; many a child grew up on cherry cokes and Shirley Temples—but Nellie May still wasn’t happy about it. Alcohol had caused some tribulations in her life and she thought it tasted as terrible as the trouble it caused. She never drank until she was older when her doctor prescribed a small nightly glass of red wine for her anemia.
In 1929, Gordon married Hylda Pauline Hughes in (probably Roseburg) Douglas Co., Oregon when he was 23 and she was 19. They lived in Colusa in 1930, both working in the upholstery business, then moved back to Chico, living there from 1933 through 1938 (he was working for a mattress factory in 1934 and 1935), and then both worked for Diamond Match Company from 1935 through 1938. Married for about ten years, they had no children.
In August 1942 at the age of 36—about a year or so following his divorce from Hylda and just after the death of his father that July—Gordon joined the Army Air Force, serving in the 306th Airdrome Squadron in the South Pacific in WWII. He served four years and was discharged on April 2, 1946. He was hurt in the war (falling from a truck or from the open bay of an airplane—depending on whose story you hear) and suffered a spine injury, walking with a limp and a cane thereafter. He could no longer drive and the government paid for an auto that could be driven with his hands. He lived on his pension and still worked some as a furniture finisher and upholstery worker.
Like Roy, Gordon had an ornery streak in him. Whenever Joanne or Shirley (Ina’s daughters) walked by him sitting in his wheelchair and no one was looking, he whacked the two little girls with his walking stick. They learned pretty quickly to give him a wide berth and run past him to avoid being his target. Everyone took his side when he denied doing it. Maybe they felt sorry for him because of his war injury.
The army accident contributed to his early death at forty-three. Three months after I was born, my mother’s brother died in Letterman’s Veterans Hospital in San Francisco in November of 1948.
Dec 16, 1922 or 23: Letter from Charles Henry Chatfield to his brother-in-law, Fred Adams:
My Dear Fred,
Your letter received several days ago, and was all glad to hear from you, and sorry to hear you had such bad luck and I hope you do come to California, as I know you will never want to go back to Montana. We are now having our rainy weather and the orange season is just over.
Leo was box maker for a fruit packing company and they just got through here and left for Imperial Valley, and Gordon went with him in the auto. The boys all have their own cars and working steadily and at home except Leo & Gordon. Howard lives here in Chico and oldest little girl took the baby prize for the best looking baby in Chico. The prize was a diamond ring.
Verda is going to school at the convent at Marysville, and Nellie May starts the 1st of Jan to “Healds Business College” takes stenography and bookkeeping. She has worked almost 5 years for the Diamond Match Co. and is well liked by the Co.
Mrs. C. has worked there for nearly a year. They make $16.00 per week. I have been with them a little over 18 months. I am in the finished lumber department.
There are over 200 women and girls working in the Match factory, and they employ about 250 more in the box factory, window, door & sash and lumber departments.
We have a 8 roomed house and 4 lots and I tried the chicken business again, have about 100 Leghorns and Rhode Island Red’s, and we have all kinds of fruit in fact too much, but we seem to get away with it.
Charley went up after some Holly berries today and if he gets some I will send you some for Christmas.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With lots of Love to Jacqueline and the girls and hope to see you all soon.
Your brother
Chas.

Aug. 12, 1943
My Dear Mom,
Well here I am at Ginger Field, Washington. I am in an Airdrome squadron and we are supposed to be across by Xmas, I hope.
An Airdrome squadron moves in on an enemy airdrome. As soon as they move out, we fix it up and have it ready for our planes to land on. Also we are the infantry of the Air Force. We all get rifles and sub-machine guns and pistols and they are making sure we learn how to use them. That part comes very easy to me, thank goodness.
Next week we are going up in the mountains above Spokane to a place called Seven Mile. We are going to sleep in Pup tents and live on regular battle rations, go through regular battle maneuvers, crawl through barbed wire over the ground and have real machine guns shooting over us just 40 inches above the ground, so believe me, I am sure going to keep my little fanny way down. Also we are going to get rifle practice and more rifle practice, as our Major told us today. It looks like all are well.
With love to all,
Your loving son Gordon
Apr 4, 1944: Gordon Gregory Chatfield in military uniform:
As I Was Told:
I only met him my Uncle Gordon once. He came to see my Mom and I thought he was very serious. He was in his uniform and he walked with a limp. He told me to lace my shoe that had come undone. He said stepping on an undone lace can cause you to fall down. At the time I thought that was why he walked with a limp as he probably fell down himself. I was about 6 or 7, I think, so that would have been 1944 or 1945. —Barbara McElhiney
Nov 1948: Letter from Noreen (Chatfield) Clemens to her sister Ina (Chatfield) Fouch:
Dear Ina,
I suppose you have heard about Gordon from Mom. Was down Sat. & Sun. Don’t see how he can live very much longer but it may be a week. Mom intends having him buried in Golden Gate Cemetery in San Francisco. Will you come down? If Jim can’t get off why don’t you come as far as Stockton & I will meet you there and we can go on in together. I came down with a strep throat as soon as I got home Monday P.M. but it is better now. Poor Mom, this is sure hard on her. Aunt Ada is with her at Charlie’s. Let me know. Our phone no. is 2143.
Love Noreen

Gordon Clemens says
I only saw our Uncle Gordon a few times when he came to Sonora to visit our family. I wish I remembered more about him but I was only about age ten years old and my main memory about him was that I had to move out of my room so he could stay for a few days visiting. He must have been a favorite brother of Mom’s as she named me Gordon in his honor. Gordon Chatfield was about ten years older than she was.
