Mrs. J.F. Mallon and three children, Devere, Marjorie and Neva, of Princeton, have the influenza in Oakland, Mrs. Tom Tuck of Princeton Is also down with the malady in the same house, as is Mrs. Chatfield, the mother of Mrs. Mallon and Mrs. Tuck, and Leslie Chatfield, Mrs. Mallon’s and Mrs. Tuck’s nephew, making seven in the house suffering of the flu. Getting nurses has been a difficult matter. Mr. Tuck conducted a search In the bay cities, and Mr. Mallon In the valley. Finally one was found and a good one. Then Mr. Mallon engaged Mrs. Rose Miller of Colusa as the day nurse, and rushed her in an auto to the house of sickness. When they arrived in the evening, Mrs. Miller was tired and Mr. Mallon sent her to a hotel to rest for the night. Next morning she, too, was sick and had to be brought home at once.

circa 1943: Les and Irene take in Irene’s nephew, Jerry Ernest Cunningham and raise him from the age of 8 until he turns 18. Jerry’s mother, Maxine Wilson Cunningham (Irene’s sister) died in childbirth and his father disappeared so Jerry was reared by his grandmother Minnie Wilson from his birth until she died in 1943. Les Sr and Irene have five boys of their own, and their only daughter, Avis, is born about the time that Jerry comes to live with them.

DEATH CLAIMS YOUNG SON OF LES CHATFIELD
Stanford, 19, Is Dead In Vallejo; Graveside Rites in Colusa
Graveside services will be held Sunday afternoon for Stanford Chatfield 19, second oldest of the six children of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Chatfield of Vallejo, who died last night following a sudden illness.
Word of Stanford’s death was telephoned last night from Vallejo to Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Chatfield of Colusa by the father, a brother of LeRoy Chatfield.
Stanford Chatfield lived in Colusa for a short time earlier this year, having been employed at the Colusa Airport. Previously he had served a short time in the merchant marine. His older brother, Junior Chatfield, 21, reportedly is on his way home from Alaska and may arrive in Vallejo in time for the funeral services there Sunday and the graveside rites to follow in Colusa.

There are four other surviving brothers and sisters, Donald, Devere, Gary, and Iris Chatfield, all of whom will come to Colusa with the bereaved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Chatfield, and Mr. And Mrs. M.L. Wilson of Oakland and Mr. and Mrs. William Flynn and family of San Jose to attend the graveside services.
Mrs. Leslie Chatfield, mother of Stanford, is the former Irene Wilson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Wilson of Colusa and Vallejo and sister of Mrs. William Flynn of San Jose, the former Elaine Wilson and M.L. Wilson, onetime editor of the Colusa Herald.
Note: Stanford was the 2nd of 6 children of Arthur Leslie “Les” Chatfield, Sr. & Irene Gertrude Alexandria Wilson; suicide overdose from a broken heart over a love affair.

I enjoy reading your family studies and the pictures are wonderful. I loved the sweet picture that is of them as newly weds sitting on the front bumper of the car. So sad for the family when they lost their 19 year old son. This is all so interesting and we could have known these families if we had only known.

Thank you for delving into this part of the Chatfields, Cousin. There were some tidbits in here I never knew, such as Grandma “Gert”s father being born in West VA. Apparently her parents went to Canada for her birth, since her mother’s family lived in Canada.
