Father of Six, Manager of Stock Shipping Group Passes
Masonic funeral services will be held at the Masonic hall in Williams at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon for Clark S. Chatfield, 68, resident of the Williams section for 24 years, who died at 7:30 Wednesday evening in Colusa Memorial Hospital.
Chatfield, a prominent and well known resident of Colusa county, had been in failing health for some time but had been admitted to the hospital just two days before his death.
Mr. Chatfield was born in Nebraska June 14, 1876. On May 28, 1911, he was married in Leadville, Colorado to his surviving wife. He was a man devoted to his family and of absolute integrity with a host of friends in Williams and Colusa country where he had lived for so many years. At the time of his marriage he was engaged in livestock raising in Colorado. After coming to Williams, some 24 years ago, he was interested in farming for some time and later was manager of the Colusa Livestock Shipping Association.
Surviving are his devoted wife, Mrs. Madge Rosa Chatfield of Williams and six children. The children are Mrs. Charlotte M. Putnam, Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Lillian Erickson, Mrs. Lola Fabris and Mrs. Norma Forcier, all of Berkeley; Aura May Chatfield of Berkeley and Clark Samuel Chatfield, Jr., of Williams. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. J.F. Mallon of Orland, Mrs. George Sawyer of Hemet, Mrs. Marjorie Tuck of Berkeley, Arthur W. Chatfield of Vallejo and Lee T. Chatfield of Butte Meadows. Four grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Chatfield was a member of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Masonic Lodge. Rev. Holmes will officiate at the services Saturday followed by interment in William cemetery under the direction of J.D. McNary.
Note: Clark had five children with Madge. The sixth child mentioned in the article refers to Charlotte Mary (Chatfield) Putnam, the daughter of Clark and his first wife Ida (Hyatt) Chatfield, who died in 1908 at the age of 27 from pulmonary tuberculosis.
As I Was Told:
My father died on November 22, l944 at Colusa Memorial Hospital – Dr. Charles Keith was his doctor and his death certificate listed only Edema as the cause. He was 68 at the time and I always remember him being extremely thin. He’d lost all of his teeth and as a result, I can’t recall him eating very much at all. The last few (10 or 12) years of his life, Mother chopped up all of his food and he ate in the living room in his chair as he had lost his appetite if he saw large amounts of food. —Aura (Chatfield) Edwards, daughter of Clark S. Chatfield, Jr. and Madge Rosa

They married the year after Gerry’s graduation in Nov of ’53 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Colusa.
