As I Was Told:
The parting words of advice to my mother from her father (Clark Samuel Chatfield, Jr.) as she boarded the train in Williams to head to Utah to join her half-sister Charlotte and enroll for her freshman year at the University of Utah: “I want you to always remember one thing about others—their attitude is: What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is mine if I can get it.”
My mother only spent one year at the University of Utah before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her degree and met my father (Alvin Jerome Fabris) while he was attending the UCB Boalt School of Law. My mother was introduced to my father by her sister Lillian— and the rest is history. I know she was always grateful to Lillian for that special act which helped shape the remainder of her lifetime.
It was always a great source of pride for my mother that both she and my father were U.C. Berkeley graduates, and that all three of her children also earned their degrees there. That accomplishment throughout her family served as an element of validation of her success as both a wife and mother. ~John Fabris, son of Lola & Al

From John Fabris: Thank you so much for the page dedicated to my mother and father. I am not surprised to read new pieces of information and to see additional pictures I have not previously seen. With each piece of your work new visions of the past are always revealed. I am greatly appreciative that you have given such great effort to document the lives of my parents and their place in our common family history.
Gordon Clemens says
This was very interesting. Maybe we can take a trip together someday and go camping in our relatives’ Humbolt redwood grove. We need to get out more and travel to more parks!!!
Catherine Sevenau says
If we stay in a hotel, I’m in! If not, you’re on your own.
John Fabris says
Dear Catherine Sevenau,
Thank you for sharing your wonderful research on the family tree of our common ancestors. My name is John Fabris, the middle son of Lola Chatfield Fabris, the second daughter of Clark Chatfield and Magdelena (Madge) Rosa Chatfield of Williams CA (Colusa County). It is so very enriching and gratifying to read of my ancestors through your knowledgeable writings, including treasured pictures, and have a greater idea of the family members that came before. The glimpse into their lives and origins are greatly appreciated and we have you to thank for sharing our story.
There were so many familiar names and relatives I only knew, or knew of, as a child. Beyond the more immediate family of aunts, uncles and cousins, the memories of the Tuck and Mallon families are etched into recollections of my distant past. And, of course, the warm memories of spending summer days at the ranch in Williams with my dear grandmother, Madge, are some of the most treasured memories of my childhood. I was 11 years old when she died and was overwhelmed with sadness and grief with her loss.
I have shared your fine work with members of my own family and they too delighted in your research. They keep telling me of the family resemblance they clearly see in looking at the old pictures you published of family members from the years in proximity to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. I will also treasure the picture of my loving mother, Lola, when she was 5 years old. I had never seen pictures of her from her childhood and am in awe seeing her at that early age. I was with her in her last moments when she passed in 2005 at the age of 90 and can say she had a wonderful life with dreams fulfilled and goals reached.
It appears that you and I are related — how distant I do not know, but related nevertheless and I send you my greetings. I want to thank you again for publishing our family tree. I am certain that any relative that reads the story you have told will be as grateful and delighted as I am. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
With warmth & appreciation,
John B. Fabris
