Mar 6, 1906: Death of Clark Samuel Chatfield, Sr. (age 67), father of Clark, Jr., in Princeton, Colusa Co., California of Bright’s disease and acute uremia (a toxic condition resulting from kidney disease in which there is retention in the bloodstream of waste products normally excreted in the urine). Clark had been staying for some months with his daughter, Jacquelin (Chatfield) Mallon.
As I Was Told:
My grandfather Clark was a stagecoach driver, and that’s how he met his wife, Ida Hyatt in Hyattsville, Wyoming. After the Colorado Midland Railroad came to Colorado, he worked for them. Later he got into the business of raising cattle and did well. He had a good-sized ranch in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. After Ida and my mother’s brothers died, he married Madge and went to California to raise rice. It was a bad year for rice. He lost quite a bit of money and then became a livestock dealer. —Pat Benacquista, granddaughter of Clark Samuel Chatfield, Jr. and Ida Hyatt
1910: Death of Oswaldo Rosa (age 45), father of Madge Rosa; in an automobile accident
Note: Duz was added to the last name to identify family from numerous other Rosas
In Casasola, Italy there are multiple Rosa families and each has a suffix added to differentiate them. Oswaldo Rosa-Duz married Santa Cecilia Rosa-Malut in Casasola on July 1, 1891. When they immigrated to America and settled in Colorado they both went by just Rosa as a surname.

… livestock buying. But she has shown them how well she can do.
According to Mrs. Chatfield, the most gratifying aspect of her career as a livestock buyer has been the fact that she was able to earn enough to finance college educations for five daughters and one son.
L.W. Feldmiller, manager of the Valley Livestock Marketing Association in Stockton, says that he has known and worked with Mrs. Chatfield for over twenty years, and that she is truly an exceptional woman.
Since the closing of the Colusa Shipping Association in about 1940, the Chatfields have been the marketing association’s contact in that area. Mrs. Chatfield has carried on a special feeder pig program in the county for the association and also has shipped them cattle and lambs.
Feldmiller says, “Mrs. Chatfield is an excellent judge of quality; and when it comes to weight, she can guess within a pound or two. She goes right out with the trucks to load, and she can scramble over a fence better than you or I. I can’t say enough for this woman—she was a tremendous aid to her husband when his health failed, and she has been a great help to us.”

Nov. 23, 1944: Obituary for Clark Samuel Chatfield, Jr., Williams, Colusa Co., California:
SERVICES FOR CLARK CHATFIELD AT MASONIC HALL 2:00 P.M. SATURDAY
Hosts of friends of Clark S. Chatfield were deeply grieved yesterday at the report of his death which occurred at Memorial Hospital at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, where he had been taken earlier that day. His passing culminated a long illness during which time his patience and fortitude were constant sources of wonder and admiration to his family and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Mason Temple at 2 p.m. Saturday. Tuscan Lodge 261 will hold services for their departed brother. Rev. Kenneth Holmes will also participate. Interment will be made in our local cemetery.
Clark Samuel Chatfield was born in Tecumseh Nebraska, on June 14, 1876, making him 68 years of age at the time of his passing. He later moved to Colorado where he met and wed Madge Rosa, on May 28, 1911. During their years together Mrs. Chatfield has been more than just a wife; she has been a partner, standing by his side through good and lean years, sharing his fortunes and tribulations with equal equanimity and devotion.
While in Colorado, Mr. Chatfield was employed as an engineer for the Colorado Midland Company later being successfully engaged in the raising of short horn cattle. Because of the advantage of California weather, the Chatfields moved to Williams where he entered the field of agriculture, later being engaged in truck gardening. For the past several years Mr. Chatfield has been manager of the Colusa County Farm Bureau Shipping Association, where with the aid of his good wife, he has given consistently satisfactory service.
As far as his declining health would permit, Mr. Chatfield entered into the civic life of our community and became an integral part of its activities. He had a life membership in the Glenwood Lodge 65, F. and A.M. of Colorado and shared in the privileges of the order in the Williams lodge. He was also a member of the order of the Eastern Star of Eureka, California.
Mr. Chatfield was decidedly a family man, deservedly proud of his fine children, all of whom are particularly close and devoted to their parents. Besides his loyal and steadfast wife, Madge, he leaves five daughters; Mrs. Charlotte W. Putnam, a daughter by a previous marriage, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Lillian Erickson, Mrs. Lola Fabris, Mrs. Norma Forcier and Miss Aura May Chatfield all of Berkeley; and one son, Clark S. Chatfield Jr., better known as “Sonny”.
Four beloved grandchildren, Patricia and Tommy Putnam, Karen Erickson, and James Chatfield Fabris also remain. The eldest of a family of seven, Clark leaves three sisters and two brothers to mourn his loss. They are Mrs. Jacqueline Mallon of Orland; Mrs. Marjorie Tuck of Berkeley; Mrs. Mabel Sawyer of Hemet; Art Chatfield of Vallejo and Lee Chatfield of Butte Meadows.
Clark Chatfield’s kindliness and generosity have long been felt by his host of friends in this county. His personal integrity and his loyalty to business obligations have made him a man to be trusted and respected. In addition, he possessed a saving sense of humor and even when he was most ill, he was always ready with a laugh or a bit of fun. Not only will his loss be keenly felt by the members of his family, whose memories will remain ever fresh, but by those with whom he came in contact through the years of his life in our community.
The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. It was established in 1850 by Robert Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, Massachusetts who had been an official with the Freemasons. It is based on teachings from the Bible, but is open to people of all monotheistic faiths. It has approximately 10,000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately one million members under its General Grand Chapter. Members of the Order are aged 18 and older; men must be Master Masons and women must have specific relationships with Masons. Originally, a woman would have to be the daughter, widow, wife, sister, or mother of a master Mason.

As I Was Told:
My father died on November 22, l944 at Colusa Memorial Hospital – Dr. Charles Keith was his doctor and his death certificate listed only Edema as the cause. He was 68 at the time and I always remember him being extremely thin. He’d lost all of his teeth and as a result, I can’t recall him eating very much at all. The last few (10 or 12) years of his life, Mother chopped up all of his food and he ate in the living room in his chair as he had lost his appetite if he saw large amounts of food. —Aura (Chatfield) Edwards, daughter of Clark S. Timeline and Records
Casasola is a village in the northeastern part in the province of Udine, Italy, founded by Luca and Marco di Rosa (hence the root name Rosa which continues to be the family name of most of the families from Casasola) from the town of Maniago, approximately 8 km away. Luca was Marco’s uncle and their purpose for moving (with their families) to the area at the base of Monte Raut was likely to make wood coal. They eventually built one large house with stone walls for their families and this house led to the naming of the village of Casasola, which means one house. This occurred in 1480. No other houses were built for over 50 years and the first small church, in honour of St. Oswald, was built in 1580. By this date, the different Rosa families were being distinguished with surnames stemming from their location in the village or other characteristics. For example, the Rosa-Tezza came from a family of weavers (tezza). The Rosa-Bernardins named all their first born Bernardo. The Rosa-Del-Vecchio had an exceptionally old grandfather.
The current Church of San Oswaldo was begun in 1650 and expanded in 1730 and again a century later. The Campanile was started in 1772 and completed in 1779. By the 1700s most of the able men would travel to the Istria region to work as lumberjacks, attesting to the lack of paid work close to home and insufficient local resources to provide for the growing population.

Rosa family photo, taken about 1954/55:
Correction from Pam Roberts, the granddaughter of Albina Rosa and the daughter of Virginia Cecelia Brown (Vanover): I found an error in the above photo. The person numbered 9 as Art Vanover is actually my father, Earl A. Brown. I also question person numbered 7 as possibly Betty Vanover (wife of Dan Vanover, Jr.).
2020. Catherine (Clemens) Sevenau.
Pam Roberts says
Catherine, first of all, thank you for all your work and research! I am the granddaughter of Albina Rosa, daughter of Virginia Cecelia (Vanover) Brown. I have a question if anyone can help me. My mother used to take a bag of oranges to the state home in Grand Junction Colorado to a relative housed there. I was quite young and do not know who this was. I remember something regarding this person being female and possibly epileptic. Does anyone know who this might have been? My mother did this for several years and my father and I would wait in the car. I never met or at that time asked questions regarding this. Would so love to know the relationship, which obviously was important to my mother. My mother passed away in 1980. I would appreciate any information. Thank you. Pam Roberts
