The Chatfield Story, by Terry M. McCarty & Margaret (Chatfield) McCarty:
Lucy (Tomlinson) Chatfield — The grandmother and matriarch, Lucy was a wise and sturdy frontier woman. Everyone called her “Grandma Lucy.” She was born in 1787 and was raised in the strict New England culture of Woodbridge, Connecticut. At the age of 19, she married Isaac Chatfield of Derby Connecticut and settled in Seymour, both localities within six miles of her birthplace. She gave birth to her first five children in Seymour. In 1816, Lucy, Isaac, and the five children moved west to the rugged, remote, undeveloped land of Middlefield, Geauga County, Ohio—then called Batavia—one of the Connecticut Land Company’s fledgling townships. In Middlefield, Lucy would bear six more children, Georgiana, her last-born in 1829. Sadly, she would lose five of her 11 children before the war started, a bitter lesson she could not ignore. After removing to North Ridgeville and then losing her husband, her letters from 1862 forward read like sermons—firm, God-fearing instruction from an experienced pioneer woman.
Isaac Chatfield — Like his wife, he was born in 1787. College-educated, he was a knowledgeable farmer and politically popular, elected as Geauga County’s Land Lister in 1821. A good reader, he often delivered passages to members of the Episcopal Church, the first religious edifice constructed in Middlefield in 1829. After dividing among his children what land he had not sold off to others, he and Lucy moved to North Ridgefield in 1860, where he died shortly before the outbreak of the war.
In 1806, at the age of 19, while still in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut, Isaac married Lucy Tomlinson, of Woodbridge, Connecticut. Born on March 20, 1787, Lucy Tomlinson was the fifth of twelve children of Levi Tomlinson and Amelia Beard. The 1806 wedding occurred during Thomas Jefferson’s second term of office, around the time of the return of Lewis and Clark following their exploration of the Louisiana Territory—an eventful time in American history. The couple settled in Seymour, Connecticut, barely six miles away from Lucy’s birthplace, where Isaac farmed while taking college coursework. After nine years of marriage, Isaac and Lucy had five children.
The family of seven moved to Batavia in Geauga County, Ohio, in 1816. One of the Connecticut Land Company’s fledgling townships, Batavia was eventually renamed Middlefield. Their move came during James Madison’s second term of office when Indiana joined the Union as the 19th state. Isaac was an adventurous 27-year-old with advanced training, a man who would quickly establish a reputation as a capable farmer and knowledgeable businessman. After having settled in Middlefield, Lucy, a sturdy and resourceful frontier woman, gave birth to six more children, bringing the child count to a total of eleven.
Isaac and Lucy Chatfield remained in Middlefield for 44 years before deciding it was time to resettle on smaller and less demanding acreage in a community that afforded convenient travel. North Ridgeville, 55 miles west, with its train station, seemed ideal. After dividing among their children what land they had not sold off to others, Isaac and Lucy moved to North Ridgeville in 1860, both 73 years old. Their dreams of travel and leisure time together were short-lived, however. Isaac died on August 1, 1861, and was buried in the North Ridgeville Cemetery. By then, Lucy had already lost five of her 11 children, and the country was at war. Isaac’s death came just four months after the firing on Fort Sumter and ten days after the Confederates had won the first battle of Bull Run.
Nine years after Isaac’s 1861 death, Lucy remarried at the age of 81. Her second husband, James W. Herrick—Margaret Prudentia Herrick Chatfield’s paternal uncle—had been the husband of Lucy’s older sister, Deborah Tomlinson. Deborah had died on March 20, 1868, and Lucy married James on October 1, 1868. The newlyweds lived in North Ridgeville until Lucy’s death at age 85 on August 20, 1872. She was buried beside her first husband, Isaac, in the Chatfield-Robb plot in the North Ridgeville Cemetery. James W. Herrick died five months later and was buried in the Herrick plot at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio.

1880: Pioneer and General History of Geauga Co., Ohio:
Isaac Chatfield moved into town and settled on lot forty, coming from Connecticut, with his wife and children, Lucius, Albert, Almira, Levi, Nathan, Ruthann, Charles, Charlotte, Maryette, LaFayette, and Georgianna. When he settled in town he was considered quite wealthy, for those times, by the people. He paid down, or nearly so for about three hundred acres of land. Mr. Chatfield erected a large two-story house, took an active part in town politics, and having attended college, and being one of the best readers, he read sermons, and, after the organization of the Episcopalian church, he conducted services, in the absence of the minister; also, he taught school several winters. After the children were all married off, the parents resided in that township until 1860. They removed to Ridgeville, Ohio, and have since died.
