AS I WAS TOLD:
Early 1930s: Lawrence Matthew Clemens joined his older brother, Carl, in California, where there was work and better weather. Employed by Frederickson & Watson Construction Company, they travelled from job to job and roomed in boarding houses wherever the work took them. In August of 1932, the brothers came to Colusa to work on the construction of the new weir, a 1,500-foot concrete dam being built to regulate the flow of the Sacramento River.
They became Sunday morning regulars at the Golden Eagle Cafe. The brothers missed their family and home-cooked food. They liked coming to the café and liked the proprietor, Mrs. Nellie Chatfield. She reminded them of their mother; she, too, believed in God, hard work, and common sense. They respected that in a woman. In return, Mrs. Chatfield admired the men, especially Carl. He was Catholic, dependable, upright, a worker, quiet and kind, and he didn’t smoke or drink. This man was a good prospect for her youngest daughter, Noreen, who, being the youngest in the family, went by “Babe”.
Comfortable around Mrs. Chatfield, Carl talked to her about the heat and the bugs, discussed the differences between hay and rice farming, and went on about Longhorns and Herefords and Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds. They could talk about almost anything. It was her daughter he was tongue-tied around. His sweaty palms refused to come out of his pockets when Babe was near, his long legs stayed wrapped and glued to the swivel chair post, his large feet locking him on.
Lawrence was the talker of the two lanky men, and he and Babe bantered back and forth, laughing and telling stories. Carl said little when Babe was nearby; he may have been twenty-six and seven years older than Lawrence, but he still had the innocence of a farm boy. Sixteen-year-old Babe always waited for the two of them to come in before making her entrance down the stairs. She sat at a nearby table while her mother cooked her a rare steak. Lawrence sat at the counter, eyeing her. She was fast-talking and quick-witted, quick to flirt, and quick to laugh.
Lawrence thought she was spoiled, getting up late and being waited on hand and foot by her mother, but he was drawn to her. She was not like the Catholic girls back home, not like most girls he knew. She seemed older and bolder, quick and outspoken. But Lawrence didn’t interest her—Carl did—Carl, who didn’t say a word to her, who could hardly look her in the eye, who could only bow his head and lower his lashes and twiddle his thumbs. Babe wasn’t used to being ignored. She set her sights on this good-looking, tall, brawny Minnesota farmer, determined to have him. She went after Carl like a western cattle queen and lassoed him like a rodeo calf. He never even felt the branding. Too shy to make a move on his own, he was roped and tied before he hit the ground.
Lawrence did everything he could to talk his brother out of it. “This girl is not going to be good for you,” he warned. “She’s not the kind of girl to marry. She’ll only cause you heartache and trouble.” Carl turned a deaf ear. And so, on February 3, 1933, within six months of meeting one another in the Golden Eagle Cafe, in an early morning Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes, with his his brother as his best man, my father married my mother. As it turned out, Lawrence wasn’t jealous. He was right.

Note: Noreen “Babe” was 17 at the time of their marriage, not 18, as stated on the license

1936-37: Minnesota: truck of Lawrence Clemens, 1936-37 Diamond T, Model 80

What that Diamond T could look like today! Thank you to Steven E. Smith, my truck/auto sleuth.

A History of the Diamond T Truck
The Diamond T was a light-duty big-truck field, what many called the “Cadillac of trucks.” Diamond Ts, no matter the size, were never short on style or class. Flowing fender lines, aggressive grilles, rakish cabs-there was simply no way to mistake a heavy hauler from the Chicago company founded by C.A. Tilt. “A truck doesn’t have to be homely,” he reportedly said more than once. Diamond T’s best year was 1936, when new truck registrations reached 8,750. Roughly a quarter-million Diamond T trucks were built over the company’s storied 56-year history.

AS I WAS TOLD: At age 30, Lawrence, who worked hard at farming, married Pearl, who labored in the laundry at St. Mary’s. On Saturday nights, they danced into each other’s hearts to the live bands at the Pla-Mor Ballroom in Rochester. After Ma died, they lived on the family farm for many years. Along with Agnes (Clemens) & Bill Hauser and their three kids, and Joe, the youngest Clemens of Matt Sr., and Barbara, they too took care of their father and ran the place. Lawrence had a big John Deere to haul hay, and one day made the mistake of putting Agnes and Bill’s son in the driver’s seat. Dick, who was 12, could barely reach the clutch nor quite strong enough to operate it, drove the tractor across the field and into the barn. Lawrence caught hell from his sister for putting her son in that dangerous position.

Survivors include her loving husband, James Haukom of Austin; son …; two daughters …; six grandchildren …; sister …; and brother …. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
In accordance with her wishes, Darlene’s body has been donated to the Mayo Clinic Anatomical Bequest Program.
