AS I WAS TOLD: Theirs was one of the first families in Rochester to have a car, a Duesenberg or a Hupmobile, (depends on you ask Sister Ann or Uncle Joe). It was big, black, and beautiful. Seven passenger, four doors, two jump seats. When cars first came out, Henry Ford said, “You can buy any color you want as long as it is black.” He also said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The second family car was a 1927 forest green Graham-Page, a real touring car, a four-door, three-seater that fit everyone in the family.
The homestead was a milk farm with thirty Holstein cows, thirty replacement heifers, and one bull, supplying milk for the Hall and Hicks (H&H) Dairy, where it was bottled and made into cheese, ice cream, and butter. Ma and Pa milked the cows until the girls came along and the girls milked the cows until the boys came along. When Amelia and Elizabeth started work they purchased a milking machine with their first paychecks. Ma could milk two cows to everyone’s one. She did a lot of the work until she moved into management, but either way, she was always the same, in charge.
The children attended the county school just down the hill and then to St. John’s Grade School in the former St. Mary’s Hall, a big two-story brick building a mile away. The three oldest girls were so close in age that Ma held Mary back a year so she and Elizabeth could start school together. Amelia was a year behind and got bumped up a grade, so all three sisters were schooled in the same classroom for a time. The kids walked to school, but in wintertime when the snow got too deep, Pa took them and picked them up, driving his two horses and bobsled with a wagon box. In 1913, the girls attended the new St. John’s grade and girls’ high school, taught by the teaching order of the Sisters of St. Francis in their brown habits.

Nov 22, 1941: Letter from my mother (age 26) to my father’s sister, Amelia Conway (age 39):

Transcribed in full
Watsonville, Cal.
Nov. 22, 1941.
Dear Amelia and all:
The last letter I had from you was dated July 11, whether I have written since then I don’t know but I probably haven’t. Not much to write about.
I started working in an apple dryer here the first of October September and got through the day before Thanksgiving. I sure was glad to be through. I don’t mind working out for a couple of months but I don’t want to any longer, my house is in terrible shape. I had an old lady in who took care of Betty and got Larry and Carleen off to school and that was about all she did do.
We have put the house up for sale and if we do get a buyer I want to buy or rent a place in the country. I want a cow and chickens and a pig family etc. Milk is 14¢ a qt., eggs 50¢ a dozen, butter 45¢ a lb. and all other prices are according. It takes every nickel you make just to eat. Meat is such a luxury even hamburger is 31¢ a lb. and pork chops are 43¢, as for beef, well I don’t even glance at steaks any more, you cant buy a steak for less than 50¢ and it takes two big ones for my family.
You asked me in your letter to send some snapshots but I haven’t any, we took three rolls while on our vacation and Betty got into the boxes and pulled the films out before I ever had a chance to send them away but we have some large ones for Xmas this year again. I just ordered them, in fact the lady came and took my order just as I started to write this. The proofs are very good, what the pictures will be like I don’t know. I hope they are good.
My sister and her family from Vallejo just drove up so will finish this later. (Verda and George Day)
Sunday p.m.
Days left about 3:30 this afternoon, things are so hectic while they are here. There are George and Verda and four kids. Jr. is nearly seventeen and the baby is a year old. George and Carl are such good friends, they really think the world of each other. The(y) go off out in the car or someplace by themselves and talk by the hour. I would think they would get tired.
I guess I haven’t written since we got our new furniture. We really couldn’t afford it but it was such a wonderful chance, we’ll never again get such a break. This couple we know broke up and we took over the contract on the furniture. It is just like new, they had it about a year and with only one little baby it hadn’t gotten scratched a bit.
We got a chesterfield set, dark red, blue rug, rug pad, occasional chair, table, floor lamp and big mirror to hang over the fireplace for the living room, a dinette set, walnut colored with cream seats, breakfast set (I sold it and kept my own as mine was a more expensive one) a Hot Point washing machine, white and a swell big white enameled stove. I traded my old washing machine for a new white and black Mix Master. Altogether we got $425 worth of stuff for $204. We pay $11.50 a month on it. I sure am glad to have some decent looking stuff, my old living room furniture was in an awful shape, well, you can imagine. I burned the old rug and sold the chesterfield and one chair for only six dollars. The other chair was a very comfortable one so I kept it and some day I hope to cover it in bright flowered chintz and use it for a bedroom chair.
Everyone here is fine, the kids and I all had an attack of stomach flu but it only lasted one day each. Betty is so cute and growing so tall, she talks a blue streak, she calls her daddy, Carl, which I think is cute but he doesn’t think much of. Her hair is blonde and real curly and her eyes blue and they just sparkle with the devil in them, then she has a dimple in each cheek and the evenest little white teeth and pinkest cheeks. I wish you would see her before she outgrows her baby cuteness. Larry and Carleen are so proud of her and just love to hear people say that she is cute, they want to take her every place they go, just to show her off.
We finished off the last of our Thanksgiving turkey today (yes, I still have the frame to make soup with tomorrow) we wouldn’t have had a turkey as it cost 38¢ a lb. this year but I won one last Sunday playing Bingo and it only cost us 60¢. We played six times.
Now that I am through working I must get started on some sewing. I have pajamas to make, coats to make for Betty and Carleen, a neighbor lady gave me two lovely coats, one a gray which I will make over for Carleen. I made her a gray tweed out of an old coat of mine and its as nice as any $10 one I ever saw in a store. The other coat she gave me is of white flannel. I’m going to dye it blue and make her a coat and hat (Betty I mean). Then I have a quilt to line and quilt, a quilt to put together for Betty’s bed. The top is made out of little squares of nursery flannel, peices (sic) left over from pajamas. I line it with flannel and put pink or blue flannel on the bottom side. Then I have kitchen curtains to make, I don’t know where to start on it all but I think I had better make Betty’s coat and hat as I gave her old one to my sister today for her baby, it was such a nice one I paid $5 for them and she only wore it one winter, she has outgrown it now. I told her to give it back to me when her baby out grew it as I may need it again some day. Betty has so many cute clothes that she has outgrown but if I had any more I suppose they would be boys and I couldn’t use them anyway.
Well, this turned into almost a novel but I must stop now, Betty is under the card table and she keeps bumping it and making me scribble all over.
Write when you can and my love to all.
Noreen

Jun 24, 1946: Patrick Henry Conway, III Pat graduated from Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minnesota early January of 1946. On January 5th, he turned seventeen. On Jun 24, 1946, he joined the U.S. Navy and was released in mid-1947. He attended the University of Notre Dame until mid-1950. According to the Rochester Post Bulletin, he was accepted as a US Air Force cadet; according to his military record, he enlisted in the Air Force on Aug 18, 1950, and was discharged Sep 1, 1950, so never served; perhaps he changed his mind to go back into the Navy.
Mar 1946: Patrick Henry Conway, III (in his dress blues, probably his graduation photo from Navy boot camp at Treasure Island, San Francisco, California):

Note: In 1941, the U.S. Navy moved onto Treasure Island as America prepared for World War II. The island became a major training and education center, with 4.5 million personnel shipped overseas from Treasure Island. By the time the war ended in 1945, aviation had changed dramatically. The Pan Am Clippers were no longer in regular service, and the island was never developed as an airport. The Navy stayed on.

Mar 31, 1947: newspaper obituary, Rochester Olmsted Co., Minnesota:
MATTHEW S. CLEMENS, 73, SUCCUMBS HERE Matthew S. Clemens, who has lived in Rochester all but the first year of his life, died in the Colonial hospital last night after an illness of two weeks. He was 73 years old. Born in Mazeppa on March 1, 1874, he was brought to Rochester as an infant. On April 19, 1897 at St. John’s church in Rochester, he married the former Barbara Nigon, who died about 10 years ago. Mr. Clemens was a farmer. Surviving him are nine children, a brother, and two sisters. In January of this year, Mr. Clemens received a gold certificate for being a member of the St. Joseph society for 50 years, an award that he treasured highly.

Jun 6, 1947: Carl and Noreen Clemens take the train for a three-week trip to Minnesota for a family gathering for the passing of his father and to help settle his dad’s estate.
AS I WAS TOLD: As Mathew left no will, his estate wasn’t settled easily or harmoniously. Quite a fight ensued as to what was going to happen to the farm. Hands were raised against one another, along with screaming, hollering, and cussing. Elizabeth slapped Amelia, or was it Amelia who slapped Elizabeth? Elizabeth was involved in taking care of her father’s finances, and the sisters were in great disagreement; it didn’t matter that it was Sunday. Bill Hauser spoke up as he and his father-in-law were good friends. Shaking his head, he said Pa and Ma would not want to witness this. When he announced that he and Agnes didn’t want anything, things settled down. Carl, who’d come from California, suggested to his brothers and sisters that Bill and Agnes get an acre of land for taking care of their parents, for which they were forever grateful. When the disbursement issues were worked out, the farm took on a different landscape. Joe, along with Amelia and Pat Conway, purchased a portion of the land, Elizabeth owned an acre, Agnes and Bill Hauser had their gifted acre, the golf club purchased four, and Mr. Vincent Lilly purchased five acres and all the buildings. The kids received equal proceeds from the sale. ~ Told to Catherine (Clemens) Sevenau by her uncle, Joseph William “Joe” Clemens (11th of 11 children of Mathew Sylvester “Matt” Clemens & Barbara Nigon)

Mar 4-6, 2009: Daily Breeze, Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles Co., California:
Corinne Conway
Devoted mother, adoring grandmother and loyal wife, Corinne Conway, a 36 year resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, passed away at home on the morning of Sunday, March 1st, 2009 after a seven month struggle to recover from a stroke. Corinne was 84 when she died. She was born Corinne Helen Liddell on March 19, 1924 in Gary, Indiana and was one of eleven children. She married Patrick Henry Conway III on November 7, 1953. Before marriage she served in the WACS during WWII and worked at a variety of jobs in and around South Bend, Indiana – including as an elevator operator and ‘flipping tin’ in a steel mill. After having seven children and living in several Midwestern and eastern states, the Conway’s settled in RPV in 1973. After raising her children she returned to work, holding various retail positions – jobs where she would have constant interaction with people, which was very important to her. Active at St. John Fisher Church, The House of Yaweh thrift store and other groups, she was always on the go. The most common memory friends have of her is that she was always fun to be around and that she enjoyed herself whatever she was doing. Her greatest passion was her grandchildren. She was an avid walker, swimmer, traveler and reader. She regularly attended live concerts and the theatre. She was immensely proud of her older brother, Barney, who performed with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra for 35 years. She enjoyed spending time with close friends, some of whom she knew for decades. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her seven children: daughters, Cynthia Conway of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Teresa Conway of Santa Barbara, CA; Connie Stannard (Jim) of Rochester, MN; Miriam Eid of Irvine CA; Laurie Gaschott (Alan) of Shoreview, MN; and sons, Patrick “Zak” Conway (Dagmar) and Dennis Conway, both of San Francisco, CA; six grandchildren; Erin, Soraya, Egon, Sophie, Ryan and Finn. As well as three siblings; Beatrice Fisher of Canoga Park, CA; Bernadette Parker of Corona, CA and Jim Liddell of La Mesa, CA. Preceded in death by parents, Beatrice and Raymond Liddell, husband, Patrick; brothers, Raymond, Barney and Robert; and sisters, Mary, Martha, Renee and Jeanne. A gathering of family & friends will be held Friday, March 6, 2009 at McCormick Redondo Beach Chapel from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm with a Memorial Mass to follow at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes at 2:30 pm. Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rochester, Minnesota.

Father Gerald Conway’s 80th birthday
Jun 5, 2011: Minnesota Visit, email from me to the cousins:
Hi, my brother Gordon Clemens, his wife Marian, and I will be in Minnesota from Jun 28th through Jul 5th for the 80th birthday party for Father Gerald. Some of you I have met, some I have not, but many of you have helped me with our family genealogy. I have some free days and would love to connect. I would also like to see the cemeteries in Mazeppa and Rochester where our family is buried. And if you could unearth any old family pictures, that would be lovely.
I have entered much of the family on the FIND A GRAVE website. Google that with my name Sevenau, it will take you to my home page. There are 284 posts for our Clemens, Nigon, Leinen, Reiland, von Ruden, and Schabo lines.
Also, Carol Stolberg, a cousin from the John von Ruden and Margaret Clemens line, will be with me for a few days. She generously sent me 80 pictures of our Clemens ancestors, only eight of which we can identify. I will bring them.
Gordon and I are the children of Carl John Clemens, son of Mathew Clemens and Barbara Nigon.
Hope to see you soon!

“Memories of Father Gerald,” my note for his memory book:
I know Father Gerald through our mutual love of genealogy. How lovely our time together during the celebration of his 80th birthday this July. He and my brother Gordon are the family record keepers. I have come along of late, though I’m more interested in the stories and photographs. Father Gerald spent hours with me at the picnic tables and on the front porch, going over family trees, trying to identify nearly 100 cabinet card pictures from the early 1900s sent recently to me by Carol (Von Ruden) Stolberg, a North Dakota Clemens/Von Ruden cousin. I felt a little guilty taking so much of his time, but we kept drifting towards one another so I could ask another question. Our heads bent over his laptop and the photo albums, we were lost in our family’s past, happy to fill in bits of this and notes of that. For me, it was the highlight of the trip. That, and getting 20 of those 100 pictures identified!

W. Travis Selmier passed away on November 23, 2019 at the age of 85, after the long good-bye that is the Alzheimer’s experience. Travis was born in 1934, the first child of Thomas and Charlotte Wise Selmier. He was joined by a brother, Dean, four years later.
He began playing violin at the age of four and entertained his mother’s Pi Omicron sorority sisters at many of their national meetings. He attended Orchard School, attended Culver Summer School, class of 1948, graduated from Culver Military Academy, Company D in 1952 and Butler University in 1957 where he majored in and taught dance. He performed with the Fort Wayne Light Opera Festival in the summer of 1954 and returned to Indianapolis where he became active with the Catholic Theater Guild and co-founded Footlite Musicals. He married in 1954 and had three children, Travis II, Rod and Lisa. He served in the Air Force 1957-1960. Returning to Indianapolis, he was a floor manager at WFBM-TV6 before founding Intro Productions. He also managed three summer seasons at the Zaring Theatre, producing, directing and casting talent such as Tallulah Bankhead, and an unknown Jane Alexander.
Travis was approached in 1962 by Allen Clowes and his family to manage the new performing arts center being built on the campus of Butler University in their name. Travis opened Clowes Memorial Hall in October 1963 and, for seven years, booked touring Broadway shows and solo musical acts. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was in residence. The performers he recalled most fondly included Mary Martin, Robert Preston and Helen Hayes from Broadway, and non-Broadway talent Liberace, Johnny Carson, Peter Paul & Mary, Patrice Munsel, Victor Borge and Marlene Dietrich. As many as 250 shows per year were presented.
After his marriage ended in divorce, he moved to Florida and California where he specialized in real estate management, dance instruction and theatre production.
In 1981, he moved to New York City to join Artec Consultants, the Clowes Hall acousticians. He worked as lead Theatre Planner on such projects as the Morton H. Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and others.
In 1984, he married Elaine Conway and in 1993 they moved back to Indianapolis where Travis formed Cultural Services Corporation to introduce school children to the performing arts. In 2013, he and Elaine retired to Scottsdale, Arizona.
He is survived by his wife Elaine, son Travis (Madeleine), daughter Lisa (David) Cunningham, and three grandchildren, Jason Selmier, and Shannon and Gabriella Cunningham.
A memorial service and interment will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery in the spring. Contributions to the Culver Educational Foundation are welcome.

Oct 7, 2025: The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona:
Judith Edna Conway passed away at her home in Arizona on October 4, 2025, having lived her 90 years to the fullest.
Judy was born on August 18, 1935 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin to Axel and Edna Worlund. She had a delightful Wisconsin childhood growing up as the youngest of three siblings and adored her older brother Kenneth and her sister Naomi. After high school, she worked for an accounting service before moving to Minneapolis Minnesota, where she worked at the University of Minnesota.
While in Minnesota, she met Bernie Conway who jokingly answered her ad for a roommate. In 1960, they were married and embarked on an extraordinary life together. She loved life as a military wife to her Air Force fighter pilot husband for 20 years, experiencing the wonder of life in undreamed-of places, including the Philippines, England, and Hawaii – moving every three years and living in 23 different houses before settling in her beloved Arizona. Judy’s home and heart were always open to her family, as well as Bernie’s large family, dear friends from all the places she ever lived, and her Arizona neighbors. Wherever she was, others wanted to be. She easily fostered friendships that she kept nurtured for years.
She worked for several years in retail clothing sales and retail home furnishings, perfecting her own unique sense of fashion and timeless interior design that all who knew her will forever remember. She played bridge and cribbage fiercely and was a devoted Green Bay Packer and Arizona Diamondbacks fan.
Judy was admired as a phenomenal cook and hostess, making entertaining look effortless. She was the very best wife, mom, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, and her favorite role “Nam” that any family could have asked for. She will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life and positive outlook. Everyone she met was family. She made people feel important and loved and will be missed by so many.
Judy is survived by her husband of 65 years Bernie, her daughter …, her grandsons S…, and two precious great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings as well as many cherished friends.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Scottsdale at 10:00 a.m. on November 3, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Judy’s name to Hospice of the Valley or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Scottsdale.

Note: Salem Township was a small area in Olmsted County. Not quite a town. Salem Corners (some records reflect that as their birthplace) is an intersection of two county roads. There was a general store, a town hall, and maybe a post office. They projected movies on the side of the town hall on weekends in the summer. As they were all born on the farm, their official birthplace is Salem Township, not Salem Corners.

2025: Researched and compiled by Catherine (Clemens) Sevenau. Thank you to Gerald Conway for his extensive family history and photos, to my uncle Joe Clemens for sharing the family stories, to Dana (Walker) Conway (the keeper of father Gerald’s records) for her contributions of photos and newspaper clippings, to Elaine (Conway) Selmier for her photos, to my brother Gordon for his records and photos, to Bernie Nigon who forwarded to me Father Gerald’s extensive genealgy files, and to all my other Conway cousins for filling in the blanks, their collaboration, and editing.
A CALLING: What calls us to find the ancestors? It goes beyond a simple curiosity. We are taken over, compelled, as if possessed by something bigger than us that is begging to be revealed. There’s one in most every family called to be the scribe, and I’m but one of many in our clan’s long line of storytellers. We gather and assemble the ancestors, for without them, we would not exist. We greet those who came before us, restoring their place in line. We scribe their stories and their histories. We search for them in public libraries, county records, and weed-filled or well-kept cemeteries. We comb through yellowed newspapers, family archives, lovely old letters, and photo albums. We find them! And in finding them, we find ourselves.
The prior keepers of our lines: Father Gerald Conway, my cousin; Sister Ann Clemens, my aunt; and Gordon Clemens, my brother. These posts would not be as complete nor correct without their meticulous research, nearly all done before the internet.
