1863: Marriage of William Henry Meyer & Susan Assel, the parents of Catherine Mary “Kate” Meyer

William Henry Meyer, the son of Baltasar Meyer & Mary Katherine Brockmeyer was born in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio and accompanied his parents to a small farm near Dubuque, Iowa when he was nine years old. He lived there for six or seven years, and then came to Wabasha Co., Minnesota with his parents. The settled on 120 acres of grub land in Pepin Township; 40 acres in section 20 and 80 acres in section 29. The family made their dwelling in a small log house in section 20. William and his brother, John Frank Meyer, assisted their father in clearing the land, which they did with the help of an ox team. The work was hard and almost constant. William had but little opportunity to attend school. In time, he succeeded to the ownership of the farm, having worked with his father until his father’s death in 1900. He improved and developed it and was successful until his retirement in 1920. William’s son, John Andrew Meyer, operated the farm after his retirement. William was a Democrat in politics, and he and his family are Catholics in religion and are members of St. Felix parish in Wabasha.

William was married Oct 9, 1869 to his first wife, Susan Assel. Susan was born in Germany, and died Mar 8, 1882. They had four children together: William Henry Meyer, Jr., Frank Joseph Meyer, Catherine Mary “Kate” Meyer (Nigon), and Marie Meyer.

On Aug 29, 1882, William married his second wife, Mary Zeimetz, of Pepin Township, Wabasha Co., Minnesota. They had six children together: Nicholas Peter Meyer, John Andrew Meyer, Thomas Theodore Meyer, Joseph Leo Meyer, Amelia Margaret Meyer, and Mae Catherine Meyer.

Rosanna Cecilia O’Neil (Nigon), age 99, of Rochester passed away on August 28, 2019 at Medford Senior Care Center in Medford, MN.

Rosanna was born December 10, 1919 in rural Eyota to Michael and Katherine (Meyer) Nigon. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1937. On June 23, 1949 she married Paul J. O’Neil at Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Rochester.

Rosanna worked as a clinic technician at Mayo Clinic for 30 years before retiring on December 15, 1981. She will be remembered for her love of cross stitching, playing cards, and volunteering with the Pink Ladies Auxiliary at St. Marys Hospital.

Rosanna is survived by three daughters, Paulene (Walter) Fleuchaus of Mount Pleasant, WI, Patricia Kolb of Faribault, MN, Sharon Remmen of Cordes Junction, AZ; eight grandchildren…, 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Kruger of Rochester, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son, John O’Neil; parents; four sisters, Marie Nigon, Agnes Zeimetz, Florence Mitchell, Helen O’Neil; two brothers, William Nigon and Leo Nigon.

The funeral service for Rosanna will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2019 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, MN with Fr. Thomas Loomis officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the River Park Chapel. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2019 at Calvary Cemetery in Chatfield, MN.

Evelyn E. Kruger, 99, of Rochester, MN died Tuesday, October 6, 2021 at Madonna Towers.

Evelyn was born November 3, 1921 on a farm in Olmsted County to Michael and Katherine Nigon. She went to rural school thru 8th grade, then to Rochester High School and graduated in 1939. She worked on a training program at Rochester High School under Belva Snodgrass for two years then at Olmsted County Highway Dept. for 21 years, and C.O. Brown Insurance for 20 years, retiring in 1985 as an accountant.

Evelyn married Harold Kruger of Plainview, MN at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester on November 16, 1946. He was a postal employee for 44 years, retiring in 1987. He passed away May 28, 2004.

Evelyn was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, and a member of the Woman’s Group, volunteering with the funeral lunch group, roadside clean-up, and money counting. She was also a member of the Rochester Methodist Hospital Auxiliary.

Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and dancing. She and Harold belonged to the Roc-8 Square Dance Club for many years. They had traveled to California, Arizona, New Jersey, Bahamas, Jamacia, Hawaii, and Columbia.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by sisters Marie, Agnes, Helen, Florence, and Rosanna and 2 brothers William and Leo.

The Funeral Service will be at 10:30AM on Saturday, October 9, 2021 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Rev. Timothy T. Reker officiating. The visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rochester. Memorials are preferred to Season’s Hospice or Madonna Towers Employee Christmas Fund.
