Aug 22, 1972: Excerpt from a letter from Lucy Elvira (Smith) Newman (granddaughter of Milo Bailey Kellogg) to Wichita Historical Society:
“In about 1906 they (Milo Bailey Kellogg and family) made the mistake of moving to Washington and taking a homestead 2½ miles from Hartford, Wash. It was beautiful virgin timber and nothing but hard work and very little income for about six years. While they were there we came to Hartford and my sister and I lived with them while my mother worked. Wish I had been old enough to gather some information. He sold it in five or six years and moved to Lake Stevens and lived on the money from the sale and his soldier’s pension for the rest of his life, until he went to the soldiers home in Orting. While in Lake Steven’s Milo died at the age of 14 (age 15). He was never well and had rheumatic fever and loss of hearing.”
Note: Marjorie Elva Kellogg was the 2nd of two children of Milo Bailey Kellogg and his 2nd wife, Elvira Miranda “Vira” Church. Marjorie and her husband Arthur L. Smith, had two children: Lucy Elvira Smith (the author of this note) and Carrie “Marie” Smith.
