“Grandpa Sevenau (note: Ernest Joseph Sevenau) worked as a longshoreman and later was a street car driver or conductor in San Francisco. He and Nana (note: Edna Marguarite Clement [Kellogg]) divorced in the late 1920’s. He then married a woman named Margaret (note: Margaret (Richard) Mersberg) and they were together until the end of his life. They lived for many years at 12 B. Balmy St. in SF. That is the Mission district and is all Hispanic now. Nana married a man by the name of Sutcliff, I think his name was Jerry, not sure though. They lived in Brisbane, just south of SF and raised English bulldogs. They divorced sometime in the 1940’s. Nana next married Solomon Blackman; he and his brothers had a band and played at a lot of ballrooms in SF. Solly died in the 50’s and Nana never married again.”

Jan 13, 2000: Letter from Donna Jeanne (Young) Warren (daughter of Sissy Sevenau who is Ernie’s sister), to her cousin Gerry Sevenau (son of Buddy & Dorothy) and his wife Kathleen:
January 13, 2000
Dear Gerry & Kathleen,
Let me start by saying how happy I am to hear from you. I hope that I can fill in some missing history from your life. I have lots of pictures and correspondence to share with you. I run our family history through my mind and don’t know where to start.
Excerpt:
Ernie was the really handsome one; great sense of humor but he couldn’t stay away from booze. (That’s been the downfall of a lot of the family.) Ernie married more than a couple of times (you have to realize that people that lived together were really looked down on, so they all got married and divorced and married and….). His first wife, Virginia, aka Cookie, had Barbara in about 1933 or 34. He then married again and had a son, Ernest, who was called Skygak. Ernie Jr. Has since passed away. There was a daughter named Jeanne, born in 1956. I have never seen her or heard from her. I got a phone call a couple of years back from an Ernest Perce. He would call occasionally and I sent him pictures.
Ernie was a wonderful guy but alcohol was his weakness. He had a girlfriend through the years, they never married but lived together on and off over the years. Her name was Mickie (note:Virginia Iva “Mickie” Doran) and her mother (note: Verna F. (Love) Doran) and Nana (note: Edna Marguarite (Clement/Kellogg) shared a place together when Nana divorced. (note: divorce refers to Gerald John “Jerry” Sutcliff)

Correspondence from Jeanne (Sevenau/Dennis) Stoll:
“My birth father was Ernest William Sevenau. I found this out about four years ago. I have communicated with a couple of people who have given me some info. One is a very nice lady in California – Pattie Barton. The other is someone who claims to be Ernest IV (?).
By the way – my name is Jeanne Marguerite Stoll. I was born a Sevenau but grew up as a Dennis. I would like to eventually find out what happened with my mom and Ernest. I’m thinking he may have been married at the time that they were together, but it seems like he still wanted to be around and that my mom just took off with me. She never told me a thing about him or even that my dad who raised me wasn’t really mine. He was my dad though and always will be. I’m just trying to find out the rest of my story I guess. I’ve often wondered too, if there are any health problems in the family that I or my sons should be aware of.
Anyway, I found out about Ernest when I contacted the church in Texas where I was baptized. It was a bit of a shock, but it has made me curious about a lot of things. Well, I’ve rambled on enough. Please get in touch. It was great hearing from you.”
Jeanne
(note to me from Jeanne Marguerite (Sevenau/Dennis) Stoll, 2009)
Correspondence from Jeanne:
“When I was eight, we lived in San Mateo for about six months and moved suddenly. Back then I was told that we moved for my dad’s job and that he had no choice. But after learning what I have over the last several years, I feel like my mom felt the need to run when she found out how close this side of the family may have been to where we were. God bless my dad who raised me. He did whatever my mom needed him too. If you ever find anyone who might know any details, I sure would love to know them. My mom hasn’t spoken to me in about 25 years which is a whole other can of worms. I believe that she is still alive, but I really not certain.”

I believe that my mom, Helen Gee, was married to Jack Dennis in 1958. Just thought I’d pass that along. It’s crazy to read all of this. I so appreciate all of your hard work.
Catherine Sevenau says
Hi Jeanne, Thank you for the correction, and for all your help on this. I fixed several other notes and have added more information, with probably more to come.
Cheryl says
Glad you were able to put this together. I was totally confused for awhile there.
Catherine Sevenau says
So was I. Once I get everything into a timeline it does fall into place, but that’s the last piece I do before the photos. It’s like doing a giant tabletop puzzle; when it’s done, you finally see the picture. The problem is, genealogy often has missing pieces, but you already know that.
